Stewart Island Ferry Services

Please note: The Stewart Island Ferry will continue to operate as a public transport service under Alert Level 4. 19th - 20th August the morning sailing will operate for essential travel. You will need to call to book a seat and will be required to bring and wear a face mask. 


Experience Foveaux Strait onboard our express catamarans. During the one-hour crossing on the Stewart Island Ferry between Bluff and Oban keep a lookout for wildlife, especially seabirds. Watching mollymawks (albatross) soaring above the ferry is a fantastic sight.

Comprehensive commentaries provide information on the interesting landmarks commonly seen, including Dog Island Lighthouse, Ruapuke Island, the Titi Islands and Mt Anglem - Stewart Island’s highest point.

We also operate coach connections from Invercargill which meet our ferry arrivals/departures. These will be available daily from 1 October 2021 - to book call 0800 656501, or select the "Invercargill to Bluff" or "Bluff to Invercargill" trip on the booking page.

What to bring

Shoes/boots (non-slip), warm clothing/jacket, sunscreen/sunglasses and camera.

Additional baggage

Personal baggage is carried free on the ferries - maximum of two bags per person (one stowed and one small carry-on).
For visitors to Stewart Island wishing to bring additional baggage, the transport of these items is by prior arrangement. This service is not available on all ferry departures, due to the size of the vessel and the limited cargo space available.

Vehicle parking at Bluff

Vehicle parking is available in Bluff, adjacent to the Bluff Visitor Terminal for self-driving visitors taking the ferry to Stewart Island. Parking is available for cars, boat trailers, coaches, campervans, motorcycles and bicycles.  This is an airport-style parking facility, so you collect a ticket on entry and pay when you leave. Vehicle parking cannot be booked in advance.

We understand that travelling to/from Stewart Island with children can be expensive, which is why we offer ‘Kids Go Free’ specials on our ferry and sometimes our tours or cruises.
